Is the Rudbeckia ‘Sunbeckia’ hardy? This is a good question. Talking to growers or marketing people they sometimes give such a product a “soft perennial” description.
We definitely want to find out this year and so we Hartwig Bull planted in summer 2023 some of his ‘Sunbeckia’ in the ground and in containers for a overwintertrial. The above picture was taken 06th December 2023. In Gönnebek where Hartwig is located, temperatures have been around 7° F at that time. So pretty tough for a annual.
Before Christmas we had not “spring” weather but temperature came up to 40° F. The plants looked somehow still alive! Amazing!
What happens at my house!
You might remember the pictures from my ‘Sunbeckia Juliana’ and ‘Sunbeckia Luna’ in my own garden this summer. They were gorgeous, full flowering and this for about 16 weeks.
Those plants have been realy powerful!
Today we have 18th February 2024 and I checked on the plants in the garden. They have been cut back and I left the plants without any cover for overwintering in the container.
Here some pictures what it looks like:
Rudbeckia ‘Sunbeckia’ hardy?
So far already a tough story. We will see what happens this spring and summer. In 2022 a ‘Sunbeckia Maya’ came through the winter and made a great show in our garden.
It will be interessting to see what happens this year. I will keep you updated.
